The purpose of this seat was a space for customers to sit, stop for a moment and be in the space, being with the moment. The constrast between the spaces and the way the body interacts with these spaces will hopefully create a greater awareness as to the philosophy of the Starfish brand.
The seat itself has been designed with a consideration with bodily interaction.
I wanted to create not just something someone would subconciously sit on, but something they could move, interact and engage with before they sit with.
A seat means a new view of the shop will be seen, they will be looking at the shop from a lower angle, which may give them a different perspective? A slower perspective perhaps?
The seat is made up of a series of L shaped arms which are able to be moved into two positions. One intended for a seat, the other intended for a table. A number of L arms are needed to sit on however they are all able to be individually moved so that they could all be used as a seat for instance or if more display space is needed for instance they could be all used for a table.
Each L arm is make up of 3 piece of 18mm Plywood glued together - so they total width is 36mm. They have a 32mm hole cut at the pivot point where the arm is on the steel tubular axel and where the L moves.
Two stops are made from RHS brackets which are attached to another RHS bracket which is attached to the wall to keep it clear from the ground. The stops are needed to hold the arms up in the upright position for the seat and the to stop it going further in the downward position for the table. The upward position is help up with a clip mechanism consisting os a steel bracket and a steel pin with a cotter pin to stop it sliding.
